Led by the Edisto Island Open Land Trust, the entire Edisto
community has been engaged in a multi-year effort to have
State Scenic Highway 174 declared a National Scenic Byway.
It has now been successful.
The Jim Self Center on the Future of Clemson University assisted in the preparation of a "corridor
management plan," which will guide the implementation of
efforts to make the highway "visitor friendly" while protecting those
things that make it special to the people of Edisto.

It is believed that receiving this designation will enhance
tourism
and our economy, which is based upon tourism, while
opening up
sources of funds for such things as additional bike
trails, scenic overlooks,
historic markers, local craft and agricultural
sales, and visitor
information kiosks.
Upon receipt of the designation EIPA through an island wide committee of enthusiastic citizens will assume the responsibility of
monitoring the Corridor Management Plan, including
maintaining the web site, which has not yet been published.
